I'm surprised women haven't been banned yet. They are by far the most wasteful sex. I used to empty my indoor garbage bin once every 2 weeks, but then I got a female roommate and had to empty it every single day. That's a 14x increase in consumption and waste!

Also, we should ban men because they start wars, and those are very wasteful, possibly more so than women... but many innovations have been a direct result of military spending. Now I'm back on the fence about who to ban, or what benefit has been provided

I admit I still enjoy women and racing (in that order) despite their wastefulness...

Wow! What a thread this is! SPIRITED!!!!

I live in the White Zombie's HOOD, and have seen it several times. When he goes to the drags; people get educated. I think that's good advertisement.

Even though Audi's diesels at Lemans were not exactly street types; the whole world
got an eye opener that diesel's could be legitiment!

I was a little surprised that in the last issue of Hot Rod: they really put down NASCAR
for not being 100% stock from the early 60's forward.
Yes, they are very far removed, but would you go pay money to watch a STOCK Camry
race? The current ones are Hot Rods!!! changed, and improved....the definition!!!

And, yes! More fuel is used for ball sports, than any motor racing anywhere!

I agree that Monster truck events are for kids, but how many other juvenile comedies

are viewed on TV by --------'sses ???

Opposites often attract. It's not impossible for a drag racing guy to also have a mpg car.

Some people would call that middle of the road American living.

As do I. It seems we were designed to pursue wasteful endeavors.

Middle of the road seems reasonable to me. Compare that to these people. They believe the universe is better off without the human species!

Every resource in the universe will eventually be consumed, so why not enjoy it while we can? I'm certainly not an advocate for "waste" or gluttony and believe conservation is important, but ultimately nothing is sustainable, and nothing matters in the end. That is of course, unless you believe in existence beyond this universe.

Honestly, I don't get NASCAR (and any other forms of roundy rounding) either. But obviously they do something right, because it's the biggest spectator sport on earth. Maybe it's the simplicity that makes it attractive. I guess if my entertainment quota wasn't already full (with F1, MotoGP, Top Gear, etc.) and I had more time, I could get into it. I've just never given it a chance. And they are finally using fuel injection this year, no?

I didn't use to appreciate NASCAR either, then I started to learn some of the technical aspects that made it more interesting. Things such as a partial grill block affect top speed. Block off more of the grill and the car goes faster, but then overheating becomes a problem and the risk of blowing the motor increases.

NASCAR taught me about grill blocking (among other things) long before I stumbled upon this site. So I enjoy the technical aspects of NASCAR; that and crashes

Can there be any other sports in a country which was built on cars and cheap fuel? Where you get media attention for being big, bad, loud and fast?
Do kids in non-motorised countries spend most of their time playing monster truck or race car computer games, or do they run around playing ball?

Simplicity. People like simplicity. Notice how ads often use slogans such as "Make your life simpler", "Wanna know how? It's simple!", etc. Automatic transmission. For many people simplicity is part of being lazy. Just a simple sport, round and round, no complicated rules to remember, no higher brain functions to employ. The simpler something is, the more people can grasp it, and more people is what we want, right? Are all the local freeways jammed when there is a chess tournament in town?
What kind of toys do little kids like? The complicated brain teasers? No! The battery powered gizmos with flashing lights and LOTS of noise. Yeah, noise is good, we like noise.

Not to mention all the safety advances, disc brakes....
Motorsports were actually invented by businessmen because people weren`t even interested in cars and racing made it exciting, thus rich folks got interested in cars and bought them. Cars were pretty hard to make and so highly priced until a good chap named Henry Ford came along and invented the first car for men of average wealth, it all went bazookas from then on and here we are.
Motorsports do stink because of fuel and noise pollution, yet they are awesome for technology advancement because the teams are well funded and don`t have to comply to any of the trends in society and latest marketing bull****, they just have to go faster.

I`d just like to see for instance F1 regulations to limit allowed fuel used for a race and add time penalty for excessive fuel use. I bet we`d pretty soon see fuel saving innovations beyond our dreams. Just check out all kinds of aerodynamic magic those F1 engineers have been doing in the past few years.
