How Much Would It Cost for You to Give Up Your Car?

Image: Commutr Beijing hopes that $3,600 will do the trick. Perhaps when you consider that that sum represents 67% of the average salary in China by purchasing power parity (source) you might think again. That would be somewhere near $30,000 in the US, and it doesn’t mean you can’t have a car, just not an old [...] Related posts:

I have a '93 Festiva and an '89 Camry-i'll be glad to sell one for $30K, keep the least polluting one(Festiva most likely) for a little while and build my Dream EV with the funds!

Heck, if I wasn't rural (and New Horizons wasn't a 60 mile one-way trip) i'd sell them both for $60K! And if the US would start importing those lovely clean 70MPG+ Diesels over here i'd blow $25K or so on one, save $20K for the taxes next year and still have enough for my EV project...

Nice dream, at least.

I would re-nig on the deals for both of my Hondas... sell them, get a total of 60K. Use that to buy a few more crap cars for $200 or so each, get them registered and insured, sell those off as well, until I had a substantial check to deposit. I would then invest a portion of it, build 2 200mile 60MPH EV's, build a small house on a 2 acre plot of land, and live.

Too bad too many other people would also have those same ideas... which is why this is so hard to believe.

To get me to give up the Insight? Right now, $109K - the price of a Tesla. Maybe in a year or two, it'll go down to $30K, or whatever Aptera decides to charge for the hybrid.

On the other hand, you could get me to stop using a car for commuting quite easily. For free, in fact, at least on days when the weather's nice enough for biking.

I just picked up an '95 Chevy AstroVan for $200. It needs a radiator and new hoses, and a flush, a new driver's seat, and back passenger seats.

I also just bought a '97 Dodge Intrepid for $150. It needs new engine bearings.

I bought (awhile back) a 2000 Dodge Caravan for $250. It needed a water pump and timing belt, and a slight tune-up.

Where do I get in line for this $30k a car deal, cuz I believe I just tripled my salary for 2008 before I even got started in 2009.
