My oil is about 4K miles into it and is still golden-brown. It's not pretty like it is when you pour it in, but it's definitely not black. It's darker, but not black.

I doubt it but that is why it's good to do an analysis to get a good base line. Check out these forums. I've seen guys go to 10k on dino oil. Analysis cost a little more but once you get your driving style down it's a no brainer. I think you would be surprised how long your oil can really go before a change. Someone can chime in but I think in europe 1 year or 15k is pretty standard.

I've always been under the impression that the black was soot from the combustion, that's why used oil always smells like an engine that's running rich.
The analysis I had was about $40 after all was said and done.

I'm just gonna go by the finger test. pull the dipstick, and swipe the oil on your finger. check for metal flakes, chunks and deep discoloration. If it's got all that stuff I'm changing it, but so far it's been going good

I change the 'hypermiler' civic oil every 5000 miles, and the 'race car' CRX every 3500.
Both cars get fresh spark plugs every year (cost is $20 for both) and trans fluid too (another $35)
Both cars have re-useable air filters. Coolant is topped off once in a while, replaced every two or three years.
Really, is it that severe?

Maybe it's just compulsiveness, but I've just about always followed the 'severe' schedule ... as it usually covers most driving other than a salesman on the highway in a moderate, dry climate.
Hondas now come with an algoryhthmic oil chnage minder ... which I mostly ignore. I currently put 9-10,000 miles on my '06 Civic per year and change the oil 3 times. It just works out that way.
I've seen UOAs that have gone 7,000 miles or more on an oil change ... but they don't look so hot. I recycle my oil so I don't feel changing my oil every 3,500 miles or so is excessive.

I put a Tiny Tac on my engine, it has an hour meter and I figure every 120 hours should come out to be about the recommended miles, both for city and highway driving, and if you think about things like oil wearing out it's the time that it spends working, not the miles of road that the tires roll over, sport bike motorcycles often get more oil changes because the engine runs hotter and spins faster, big trucks go longer because they have more oil, turn slower and have a higher average speed.

All Volvo models recommend 7500 mile oil change intervals and I also use the same.
