...while driving, I try (vainly) to remember these thoughts:

1) PATIENCE is a virture much appreciated in people behind you, but seldom appreciated in the person ahead of you.

2) Roadways are collectively owned, not individually owned.

3) Mirrors--like roadways--have IDIOTS on both sides.

...so, sadly, achieving Hypermilling Nirvana is nearly impossible.

Being an engineer and not a poet, here's how I look at it. (I think I interpreted the OP correctly.)

Everybody on the road is running a multivariable optimization problem, simultaneously trying to achieve multiple goals. Some driver's goals include saving gas, saving time, finishing a telephone conversation with a loved one, trying to stay out of traffic court, etc.

Chances are you prioritize saving gas. You know how annoying it is when someone pulls into traffic in front of you and interrupts your EOC or forces you to use the brakes. Or how it feels when you're trying to DWL but everyone else seems to have their cruise control on. I would imagine that's exactly how it feels for someone who is optimizing for minimum time in transit, when they come up behind someone doing the speed limit or less. Or if someone behind you is talking on the phone, and you start to P&G or even DWL in front of them, you're distracting them. That's annoying.

A little understanding of the perspective of your fellow road users will go a long way. Even if you don't agree with their goals, you should help those people achieve them. That means being predictable, helping other drivers pass you, and in heavy traffic, going >PSL.

You may think your goals will save the world, while theirs are the problem with society today. But sometimes, you just have to live and let live.

I noted that on days that the roads are covered with snow, there are those that two classes of drivers too, a$$holes and idiots.

The a$$shole is the one that has better equipment, training, experience than you and wants to go faster than you. The idiot is the one with inferior equipment, less training or has had bad experience and wants to go slower than you.

It's all a matter of perspective and priorities.

...using the analogy of an Alaskan Iditarod "...dog's viewpoint...", it all really depends upon whether you're in FRONT, in the MIDDLE, or at the BACK of the freeway "pack" as to who and what you SEE (ha,ha).
