Hyundai pledges to hit 40 mpg with 2012 Veloster, beat out Honda CR-Z

Not sure I like the styling, but 40 mpg is hard to beat... You can currently only get that with a Fiesta SFE I believe.

Quote:
...the Korean automaker expects to breach the 40 miles-per-gallon barrier with its forthcoming small sports coupe. Conveniently, if they can reach that performance target, that would best the new 2011 Honda CR-Z, which, despite its hybrid powertrain, achieves just 36/39 city/highway when equipped with a CVT and 31/37 with a manual gearbox.

...

Given that it won't have the cost penalty of a hybrid drivetrain (a 140-horsepower, 1.6-liter engine is expected), we'd be surprised if it doesn't come in at a lower price-point, as well.

...

With 40 mpg practicality and superior utility, it would appear that the Veloster not only has a shot at taking on Honda's CR-Z, but also more conventional economy cars like the Ford Fiesta, perhaps trading a bit of practicality in favor of edgier coupe styling and (hopefully) greater performance.

Too bad there aren't more details about how they're going to achieve that goal.

Automakers "pledge" all kinds of crap they later forget about. (Call me a cynic!)

Shouldn't be too hard, as I used to get mid-40s with my '85 CRX - and that still had a carb.

But they won't get me to buy one unless they have a way to take out the @$%! video screen.

Well, its not hard to hit 40 mpg in a lot of vehicles. However, it is harder to hit 40 mpg on the EPA rating especially with todays heavy and in most cases larger vehicles.

Daox -

This reminds me of the CRX wars. IMO your Paseo, the Nissan NX (the evil egg), and the Mazda MX-3 were direct competitors to the CRX.

I hope Hyundai calms down the concept design. Don't like it's looks.

Exactly my point! I'd rather have smaller, lighter, and video screen- free with better mpg.

Well, considering the all new, and larger Sonata gets 40 MPG highway, it should be automatic that the similarly designed replacement for the Accent should do better, and be somewhat cheaper, however I read that the only version available will be a four door sedan. No more hatch models, 3 or 5 door. It also appears the sub 10k price point is gone as well.

I'm seeing brand new 3 door Accents with all the incentives selling for $8,800 or so. That and 36 mpg seems like the best all around budget deal going in the US.
