I'd love to have a hybrid!

Hiya,

After eeking out a high of 47.5 in my xA; and most recently I have been seeing 41.5-43mpg -- because of the cooler weather and the denser air, (and winter blend of gasoline?).

This week I get to drive my Mom's 2005 Prius -- and during the first 175 miles I've driven it -- I averaged 58.9mpg!! Just like that; I shatter my best wit the xA, and I got at least 15-17 MORE mpg than I was getting just prior...

Wow.

I don't have to shut it off at traffic lights, or in stop-and-go traffic. I only need to "downshift" (into 'B') when I need to slow down -- no coasting in neutral, etc. It's too easy!

Yeah, they definitly are nice. Look at the numbers some of the insight boys are getting. Also, diamondlarry has been pushing some incredible numbers out of his Prius this summer. 60mpg is the tip of the iceberg.

Yea I saw something on news about some hypermilers getting 100+mpg. But I think that is the point that neil is making, on his first tank without really knowing the car or trying too hard he got almost 60 mpg.

Isn't it great I rented an NW20 last year in LA... I thought it was very fun

The things you like are exactly why I like the Prius (and similar)....

Sure, you could get great numbers like that from a 3 cyl geo.... But people aren't willing to compromise enough... Give them a Prius, which is a fairly large car, and they get these great numbers no sweat. Little to no compromise, better FE.

Okay fine, there's hybrid SUV's - you'll go from 20 to 30 (or whatever)... But those additional 10mpg save more fuel than going from 45 to 60 o.0 It'd be great if they went from 20 to 60, but lets not yell at brick walls

Hi,

I drove it in to work today, and raised the average to 59.9...I'll check the tire pressure when I get home, and I'm going to try some zigzag tape, too.

Yeah, I was thinking about the new Insight, too -- with it's lighter weight (and slightly better aero?), it should be a shoo in for 70+mpg.

The incredible is that they can maintain an high mpg day after day...

Yes you correctly read
  • Dan has done a 1000 miles tank in a prius at 91 mpg
  • Sean is doing a 1600 miles tank in an insight at 120 mpg.
These numbers are just overflowing my little cells in my brain...

Denis.

(Sigh) I suppose I should feel bad about my 70.9 mpg average (over 5 years/80K miles). But that's not serious hyper-miling: it includes going up & down the Sierras most every trip, driving 8900 ft passes in snowstorms to get to skiing, the occasional stretch of dirt road & stream fording to get to trailheads...
