Ideas for quick release windshield wiper arms?
Posting this picture in the thread about comments people have made about (or left on) the car got a discussion going about removing windshield wipers.
Specifically, I mentioned I was looking for ideas for a "quick release" method that didn't require tools and wouldn't eventually wreck the splines on the shaft that the arm attaches to.
Note placement under a wiperless arm.

I like how the note is pinned down by a windshield wiper arm WITHOUT the wiper on the end!

Don't accidently scratch your windshield! I wouldn't have that arm on there.

Ah, but it's SOOOO much better aerodynamically like that!
It's MUCH easier to pop the wiper off there than at the base of the arm.
Of course all modifications are taken at a users own risk.

There's black duct tape stuck to the end of the arm where it touches the glass. (I haven't yet devised an easy/quick-release way to get the entire arm on/off. )

Isn't it just a single bolt ? I can remove my wiper arms and put them back on in less than a minute. |

It is a single bolt. But I don't consider a mod that requires a tool, and aligning fine splines (to put back on ), to be "quick release".

Batmobile Junior, I like that!
My wiper arms are quick release, no tools, but I prefer to just leave them on. For yours, I would just scribe a line on both the arm and shaft, and carry an appropriate wrench for the nut.
A wiper cover might be something to try too, if you haven't already. With the mileage you're getting, you should be able to tell if it is helping or hurting.

What about making a little rubber wheel/roller that takes the place of the the wiper blade? Remove the blade and pop on the wheel.

One thing I was thinking: welding "wings" onto the nut so I don't technically need tools to remove/tighten them.
But it would still be fussy dealing with the splines, and eventually I think I would wear them out.
