Inspection Success!

The Nut Wagon passed New York State's annual safety inspection again! It's really rusty, but I take it to a shop that's pretty lenient. And the guys there like my car.

My fuel tank leaks when full, so I can't calculate MPG anymore. Of course I'm still hypermiling it, just no more numbers to brag about.

51,825.5 miles logged here with an average of 62.2 MPG.
244k miles on the car now. It's been in the family since 2003 when it had 75k miles on it.

They passed it without the mirrors?

If it "leaks", that begs the question: how much gasoline do you 'lose' to evaopration and spillage?

.

The simplest way to repair a leaking fuel tank.

Is it the tank or the filler neck that leaks? Might not be a tough fix if the latter.

I always put the mirror back on for inspection! :)

The last time I completely filled the tank, I lost an estimated 2 gallons. :o

I'm not sure if I'll fix the tank. I have other cars without rust that I should be working on!

Good question. I replaced the tank with a new OEM part back in 2006. And I put a used filler neck in it a few years later. Both parts are now discontinued. The car was really living up to my username the last time I completely filled the tank. Stunk up my whole yard. I never saw it dripping, but based on how fast the gauge dropped, I lost about two gallons somewhere. It still hisses when I remove the gas cap. I have no idea how it can hold air but not liquid.

How much do you think it would cost to make it at least look less rusty? Was it out of question to pour some Hammerite on it? :D

Does VT require outside mirrors? Driver's side is required in NY. They guy who inspected it wasn't sure about the missing dashboard and had to look up if it was required.

I'm more concerned about the structural rust!

It does, but I have cameras in their place. The owner of the shop scratched her head about, talked to some people, and passed me. They effectively mirror what's behind the car, after all.
