This idea seems to have some merit- especially on my old diesel

Now I just need to find some insulating tape, and also get a thermostat

good work- I'll be interested to see results

Josh8loop mentioned my "material useage", which was shown in the photos in the first post in this thread.

This is insulating foam "tape", about 1/4 inch or 6 mm thick. Made to be spiral-wrapped around pipe to prevent water condensation on outside of pipe. It works well when used on a valve cover.

I'd like to see how would it work insulating the oil sump.

It would insulate, all right. Any oil dripping down the sides of the sump might loosen the adhesive backing of the insulation. And you would have to leave access to get at the drain plug for oil changes.

That's for sure. So, I'd stick with my initial idea and eventually make a custom fiberglass oil pan, which is naturally more insulated than one made out of sheetmetal anyway

They sure do.
They also cut down noise.

On my car, there's a foam insert underneath (and glued to) the plastic cover.
The foam came off the cover when an injector was leaking though - engine bay temps were VERY high then as it was blowing out hot exhaust gasses.

(High temps as in bonnet touchable, but too hot to hold on to.)

Maybe this is why a lot of OEM's have been covering the engines with those plastic covers for a few years now. Sort of as an air bubble to trap heat?

Not considering, in action.
My golf was totaled in a hit and run.
I purchased a 2003 Jetta wagon premium (every option available in USA in a mkiv vw) and a TDI out of another collision to swap in.
