Interesting eco-driving studies and presentations

By surfing the web, I found a few interesting studies and presentations on eco-driving.

The first one is a 1999 Swedish pre-study called "Impact of EcoDriving on emissions and fuel consumption". Most interesting are the before/after learning in chapter 3 : slow down, acceleration, speed, rpm, gear change sequence, constant speed, pedal position...
Note: it's the only study I found which is saying that eco-driving can have a negative effect on CO and HC emissions.

The second one is a 2008 Belgian presentation called "Driving Style of the 21st century". Shows interesting data about tires, speed, accelerations, gear change... It includes a BSFC in the acceleration slides !

The third one is a 2007 Swedish presentation called "Great savings every kilometre". It's the only one talking about total cost. It references these 2 flyers : "tips on how to stretch your fuel tank" and "Eco driving can slash HDV fuel bills".
Note : 1SEK = 0,10513€ = 0,14947$

Hope it helps to spread the knowledge...

Denis.

Thanks for these links. I have also wondered about the effect on emissions with Ecodriving. Unfortunately, I couldn't read the first PDF for some reason. If you could read it, then there must me something wrong with my PC's config.

I like one of the quotes in the presentations :

"It's your concern when your neighbour's house is on fire." Horatius (65 to 8 B.C.)

Interesting. I saw in the Swedish presentation that eco-driving training has been a required part of all driver training courses in Sweden since 2007. That's an idea the US could definitely use.

another hint: 1 liter saved per 100 km is about 0.26 gallons per 60 miles

The third file says :
  • 1 litre petrol = 2.32 kg CO2
  • 1 litre diesel = 2.54 kg CO2
So the more gas you save, the more CO2 you save. I manually calculate my CO2 saving by using a calculated mean for current french cars but I obtained 26.6g/litre for diesel and 24.6g/litre for petrol.

For other pollutants it's far more complicated and I didn't found any clear response, the studies are mainly about CO2. The second document (p.34-35) is showing very good saving :
  • -50% CO,
  • -33% HC and
  • -25% NOx;
but the first document is showing the contrary :
  • +100% CO,
  • +12% HC and
  • -15% NOx.

It's always working for me. I put copies there (please don't use it if the original works for you). The original document is in pdf1.2 format. I exported it to pdf1.4 but with the OpenSource tool I'm using its length grew from 1MB to 20MB and zipping it saves less than 2% so I let it as is.

It reminds me some Midnight Oil lyrics :

Code:
The time has come to say fair's fair
To pay the rent, now to pay our share
The time has come, a fact's a fact
It belongs to them, we're gonna give it back

How can we dance when our earth is turning
How do we sleep while our beds are burning
Have fun,

Denis.

Sorry, I forgot the metric system is my native system

1 mile = 1.609 km - 1 km = 0.622 mile
1 gallon = 3.785 litres - 1 litre = 0.264 gallons

And now the magic conversion formulas for consumptions :
m MPG = 235 / L l/100
L l/100 = 235 / m MPG

I was able to read the converted PDFs. Thanks. This is a graph I am very familiar with :

(from 1999_165E_impact_of_ecodriving_on_emissions_and_fu el_consumption pdf file)

Under many conditions, the leaner the burn, the higher the NOx.

I do like the idea of an "emissions estimator" in our eco-feedback gizmos :

Because, if we knew our emissions, we could find the "sweet-spot" for FE and emissions :

I found the bit about 100kg increasing consumption 1l/100km a little suspect.

May be in smarts or in non maintained very old non-turbocharged diesel

This is like the AC, I never saw an added 1l/100km in my newer car, but may be mine is too well maintained

What was interesting is that these presentations were far more complete than the usual 1 or 2 rules reports on French TV (top 3 : respect speed limits, check tires and maintain the car) saying you will save 33% of gas (ie EPA +50%).

Denis.
