iPhone + Rev app = OBD-II

I was playing w/ my wife's iphone last night, which will be mine in a few weeks after she gets a new phone, (She doesn't like it, why I don't know) ... anyway, I was looking around the 'app store' and found this interesting bit of software that is in the preliminary stages for the iphone. You can download it now, with very limited functionality, but the interesting part is ... they are looking into creating a OBD-II/WLAN Hardware Interface to interact w/ the software and the iphone. IE: OBD readings on your iphone!!! If they can keep this affordable, they have a surefire hit on their hands. This would be amazing, my phone, ipod, MPG reading device, etc. all in one. I can't wait to see what becomes of this.

yup, we gnashed once here, I wasn't happy with the abundance of hype and expense and the lack of details on how to actually do it.

The iphone + obd2 = sweet fe instrumentation possibilities?

Yeah, I know nothing about the whole OBD interface, expense, etc. But if this is something I could just purchase, reasonably, ie: I'm thinking $100 or less is the sweet spot. In my opinion, anything over $100 is too much. But if this could hit that price range, be something you simply plug n play, etc. ... They gotta think apple ... make it so simple a baby could do it ... but think of the possibilities, if this could sync up to some other app, or even store your mileage, etc. and be viewable as graphs, etc. to show your mileage over time, along w/ the other various things something like this could read ... this could be amazing! The beauty of this would be the plug n play/ease of use aspect. If they can manage to keep the final cost down ... they've got my sale.

So far my favorite (price aside) toy that seems to have the right features to make you a better hypermiler and some useful non glitzy extras is the dynodash

Screen Shots - Scan Tool, Performance Meter, Data Logger | DashDyno SPD

But it is an incremental tool over the scangauge or the mpguino for that matter in terms of the essential feedback items. You can make a whole lot of improvement with just an instant mpg and a trip mpg.

Therein lies the problem ... $379 = way too much in my opinion ... cool lil gadget, but too expensive, atleast for what I'd be using it for. Basically, they need a 'lite' version of these, one that only measures the mpg or minor things maybe?

iphone

Yes, I love that Apple allows third-party applications now and visit the Apple Store at least once a week to see what new cool and useful applications there are. Some of my favorites are TSheets Time Tracker for project management and iZoho, which is kind of like an office suite with spreadsheet and word, & the iZoho Expense View allows you to enter your expenses right into your phone (so you don't forget like I always do!).
