First look: 2012... current bid, $1,600! Whoa!

Second look: Flood. Oh.

Wonder how much of the hardware is salvageable... the motor should be water-sealed, right?

It's a crap shoot. Spend 5k + fix it or use it for parts. You can build 4 with it. Front end, each side, rear end. You still have the whole powertrain and interior left over and 4 repaired cars, but it takes time and a good deal of money tied up for a while. I have also fixed water damaged cars, and most of the parts you need are the ones the salvage yards never sell.

Only thing my Fiesta has needed in 11k miles is to have the accent light switch plugged in, was not done at the factory, they (body shop) never touched the dash or console. An oil change at 5k and 12.5k, next one at 20k.

The estimate on that Prius seems low at less than 6k. Would have liked to look it over when it was still showing the water level and type (salt or fresh, makes a big difference).
Fixed an 82 300 SD Benz once that rolled into the Atlantic Ocean off the owners boat ramp. $8500 30 years ago.

Quick, someone swap in a 3 cyl diesel and build a fiberglass boat tail.

My brother had a huge diesel Chevy truck that was totalled due to salt water. The salt water never touched the floor of the cab and he knew exactly where the level had been. They gave him, $24,000 and he kept the truck (valued at 7k salvage).

We checked the tranny and diff, no salt water contamination. Never replaced a single part on the truck and later sold it for close to $30k.

Knowledge is a powerful tool, expecially when combined with a dogged determination to succeed.

I can fix just about anything, which means the question is how much does it cost and how long will it take. In the case of this Prius C I have plenty of time, suffecient capital, and the facility. All are paid in full and the capital is not doing well in other investments. I don't even have to fix the car, just part it out and sell the parts and easily double (or triple) my money, but it would take 5 years. I also have a friend who is the service manager at the local Toyota dealership who would give me technical help fairly inexpensively.

regards
Mech

It wouldn't surprize me if some of the owners "accidentally" let their cars get flooded. You know, it's old and needs a lot of work so leave the sucker where the water will get to it and get paid on a comprehensive claim.

I'll bid on it tomorrow, but my buddy (who owns the body shop that will buy it) doesn't think it will go that cheap. Stopped by the Toyota dealer today and the most likely damage is to the air bag modules and wiring harness as well as the pretensioners for the front seat belts.

If I get it then I will tear it down to see exactly where the water level was and whether it was fresh or salt water. Can't do any thorough inspection prior to the sale date, but as I posted earlier it would be worth my bid amount even if I had to part it out.

Regards
Mech
