Junk Raft

When we were out in the LA area, we went to the aquarium at Long Beach.

There appeared to be a boat at the dock there made from an old airplane hull and a raft made of empty plastic bottles netted together.

Sure enough, my brother found a web page for it.

Looks like they were prepping for their maiden voyage when we saw it.

Check out the web page:

I hope they make it. While I was in the Navy and out on ships I always cringed at the dumping of trash. Whenever possible I kept trash to a minimum and tried to hold it until we hit port. Not always easy to do though. Some of the guys that worked for me understood, others didn't. I do know that the Navy is now doing a lot more, including melting plastics into blocks and holding onboard, than they did before.

That is awesome. I have always been a fan of Thor Hayerdahl and his epic voyages. It is nice to see its spirit being carried on. I just wish they needed an extra crewman...

Hopefully I'll be able to go see them off next weekend. I'm down in that area somewhat often, I'm amazed I didn't see them...

Speaking of junk rafts, this is definately the coolest one I've seen.
