Hello!

Looking for ways to save energy. Interested in modifing current cars for economy and converting something to electric for a 100 mile, roundtrip commute.

Current test truck is a '99 Chevy S-10, 2.2L, automatic, 2 wheel drive and an alum. cap. 106K miles.

Mods are a carefull foot, cold air intake and free flow cat. coverter.

Stock MPG was 22 to 24, current is 26.5 (better with summer gas)

I'd start with a look at the 65+ mods list we have. It is a good list of proven modifications. While you are at it, I would definitely take a look at the 100+ hypermiling tips which will help you change your driving habits. It seems you are doing pretty good, but driving techniques have huge impacts on mileage, so its worth looking into.

As for a 100 mile EV, its possible, but pushing it. To go that far, you really need a lithium ion pack which means a fair amount of money as lithium is currently 2.5X the price per Wh vs lead acid. I don't want to discourage you, just letting you know.

I'll get to looking around ASAP. I question some Hypermiling practices, especally with an automatic. Drafting? Let it be known I have good brakes and a hungry lawyer.

I'm going to up my tire size from the stock, 205 70-15 to 215 70's. I noticed the taller snows actually made up for the cold and winter gas and the old ones aer close to done.

That should be 205 75-15 stock

In my car, it's easier to notice than most, but, in the absence of a crosswind, you can draft a tractor trailer at three trailer-lengths and get a measurable bonus.
