Look at Thentro's second photo, with the oil streaks. In wind tunnels they use oil with lamp black added. For our purposes, some dirty motor oil would be just fine, and the price is right. Dabbing a few spots of it on a clean undertray would be quick and easy.

BTW, Hucho also has a nice wind tunnel photo showing a smoke wand trail, and it juts diagonally as it flows under the front bumper, a more acute angle than shown in the drawings posted above.
