Step 1: Get the ScanGauge handy.
Step 2: Note the mileage is not as advertised
Step 3: Publish Results
Step 4: Politely ask them to leave

RH77 brought up a point that I have seen firsthand... Mileage is not as advertised... now having said that, I had a discussion with a gentleman that owns a new Malibu hybrid and he cycled the odometer/trip computer unit for me... and it showed a working average of 49.6mpg and a remaining tank of 613 miles. And according to the fuel gauge, it was at 3/4 of a tank. That is just enough for me to want to test drive it myself!! lol

GREAT to hear somebody almost hit 50 in a Malibu!

Sounds like it leans towards the Prius; HOW a person drives becomes even more exaggerated compared to regular gas cars.

Check out the new Ford hybrid Fusion. 39mpg city. It might be exactly what you're looking for.

Hmm, have not liked the looks of the Fusion, and a few other things about Ford bug me.

I would invite them and let the public decide.

Your part as you said it in the first post it to get as many there as you can.
Leave it at that and make your part as straightforward as you can.
I would suggest you will have enough to do as it is on the day without fending off extra criticism because this brand wasn't invited but that brand was etc. and yes I am speaking from personal experience here having helped organise something similar here a few years ago.
We were lucky in that only Honda and Toyota sell hybrids here so it was an easy choice there.
Even so we had flak from people who though NO cars should be there.

Cheers , Pete.

My real problem is that currently, all the hybrid solutions being offered seem to be automatic transmissions. That's a non-starter for me right there.

FYI: Most hybrids that are marketed with an 'automatic' trans actually have a CVT.

I own a 09 Malibu hybrid yeah 2mpgs more isn't much but I can't complain about that because its a huge car its as long and wide as a Tahoe. The ride is great no complaints yeah its an auto but using the cruise control is where its at I travel 26 miles to work everyday and every time my a rage goes up a mile but when I drive around town it goes back down (also speeding to the fire house doesn't help) my only question or some something I'd like to know is that can i change the amount of the electric assist system? If so I believe I could get more out of that car. I'm also looking into a fiberglass ram induction hood is it a good idea?
