Mercedes 220D?

I found a long-parked 1974(?) Mercedes 220D. I did a quick wiki search and found that they were offered from 1968-1974. My question is, is this a good kind of rare or an Edsel kind of rare? 240Ds have their place, but is the 220D something that would be worth putting some money into or would a more common Mercedes diesel be a better choice?

War_Wagon -

My previous mechanic had a customer that converted a 1970's era MBD to veggie oil, but it was a disaster. He warned her not to do it because the cost of the parts was astronomical, but she wouldn't listen. It didn't end well.

Made me look :

Mercedes 220D

But I don't know, maybe the 220D was the cherry of the bunch.

We have an early 70's 220D on the farm. Not sure about parts availiblity, but ours is a tank. Pretty sure my brother runs a good mixture of WVO thru it with no ill effects so far.

They're tanks, but not spectacularly efficient, being rather heavy and underpowered.

True enough! It is deff not quick off the line, thats for sure. It is a nice ride though. I would jump on a 220D if I could find a nice looking/running one (ours looks like a farm ride).

The pre-W123 vehicles are very collectible. Don't ruin it with vegetable oil, use biodiesel instead. I've got a 240D, 1983, and it's a great car. Not the most efficient, but comfortable and cruises nicely.
