It depends. The taller your final drive, the farther out of reach 1st gear gets, especially on a standing start uphill and fully loaded. As engines become smaller, the more critical it becomes to match the torque curve with a handy ratio. ymmv.

I still don't expect a lot of MB products in this country w/o a slush box.

I'm with solveredwings.
Very nice but... not likely to appear here.

Would be nice if lower priced brands would add those economy features more often.

Well that's refreshing news. I'd still like to see what percentage they ship with sticks.

I skip-shift my truck almost without thinking about it. The truck isn't the lightest thing out there, and the engine isn't very powerful, but the torque band is pretty healthy. 1st, 3rd, 5th is my usual pattern. Sometimes it's 1-2-4-5. I think about the accelerator pump every time I do it, too.

My Dad's old SAAB had a smooth underbelly - the only thing in the wind was the exhaust, and after that rusted away, not even that. A 1970 model, it got 40mpg. I miss that car.

MBUSA would never bring anything cool like that to the US market since they are more about making the brand look like a luxury brand other than something like.. Ford or something. Even though Mercedes AG makes everything from buses to race cars, we'll never see anything cool.

Isn't it ford who's making the shift to a six-speed automatic across the board by 2010? Anyone else heard this?

The car in the article is the C200 CDI diesel, not the C300.

Good jobs Mb. I hope, this car isn't just another "Eco" model for money.
Many times i've seen the "Eco" with extra pay from stock model
