Question Metro Auto Trans. Fluid

I know this is rather a stupid question, but I just wanted to check before going through with it. The manual for my 93 Metro states that the auto. trans takes 5.2 qt. of trans fluid, whereas the book at the auto parts store states it only takes 1.5 qt. Also, when I just drained it it was only about 1.5 qt. I just wanted to know if I should only refill it w/ 1.5 or go by the manual.

Thanks

I am thinking it will lose that much (1.5 qt) with the pan dropped and not actually pumping out the torque converter and valve body.

Add the 1.5 and start the engine and let it warm up to operating temp. Pull out the trans stick with the engine running and check the level.

...the 1.5 qt value is only what's in the transmission pan, it's not the total fluid capacity which includes the torque-converter, which is where MOST of the fluid actually is (as Johnny Mullet stated).

...so, view the 1.5 qt value as a "DIY" pan-drop quantity, and the 5.2 qt value as a "total" draining operation (as the OEM dealer would perform).
