First Gen Insight Project

This car is for sale near me on CL and I'm thinking about getting it. The problem is, it has a salvage title. My question- is that problem really a problem? Is this Insight a good deal? I called the guy and he said he just bought it last week at a sale. It's a 2002 with 220k miles for 2000 bucks. I'm a new guy looking to get into this, and I need some advice.

Please and thanks!

2002 HONDA Insight (HYBRID)

The title isn't a problem in itself, but why does the car have the title?

That's about a thousand less than the lowest I've seen an Insight, clean or not. As long as the frame isn't mangled, I'd love to own it.

Bring it to a mechanic and get it inspected, for anything and everything, codes, herky jerky, engine mounts, cat, lifetime mpg etc. Assume the battery pack is toast, and he has no idea how to deal with an IMA light (no big deal). Make a little fuss of it to see if you can get it for a little less. As long as it's mechanically sound and the transmission doesn't grind on down shifting in the lower gears, snap it up as fast as you can!

It could be gone in less than 24 hours. But don't buy it unless a mechanic looks at it first! A fuel efficient car won't save you money if it's unreliable or has hidden issues in need of repair.
