aerodynamics and rolling resistance. the newer mercedes designs are extremely aerodynamic. it doesnt matter how you tune the car or how big or small the engine is, you have to burn gasoline to move all that air out of the way and turn all those rotating parts

EDIT: depending on how much you drive, a beater car could actually pay for itself in fuel AND countering the depreciation of the evo
