monitoring help

my car is old, has a carburator. 3psi fuel system, very slow.. it is so slow, as the tank expands to warmth, the gas gauge changes all the time... I know I am in mid 30s mpg...but there is a specific sprite of 40s and 50s.. and I want to catch it. the lack of being able to is frustrating.

tomorrow, I drive highway for 230 miles round trip...any ideas? the highway is the place (of course) the 40s and 50s happen..but want to know exactly when...
I keep an overall result rounding about the mid 30s and it is underestimated. Would love some precision...somehow...
