Here is a paper from Avago on the savings that can be obtained from switch to LEDs. Note that it is targeting the Auto mfg and showing potential savings with things like alternator down sizing and using smaller diameter wiring so the total savings isn't 100% applicable to your average ecomodder.

Application Note - AN 11552 Electrical Power Savings LED Signal lights (318 KB)

Also note they figure a rule of thumb each Watt used equates to 0.005 mpg with a 27mpg car from an Auto manufacture perspective. For a typical modder I would think they could expect at least half that.

So I figure for a rule of thumb go by 0.0025mpg improvement per Watt saved.

Did you notice a difference with blink speed? I noted while shopping that they "Suggest" you use a Load resister to "simulate" the additional draw of the incadesent bulbs, this prevents the mechanical blinker unit from failing due to lack of Draw.

I noticed the Bulbs go for about 1-2 $@ the resisters go for 4-5$@ or I can get a solid state Blinker module for $15 that has no minimum draw so works with LED lights. (Dont remember what the trailer conversion units like you got cost). if I go with bulbs. Im lookig at 30+ dollars for resisters and might as well just go with a solid state Blinker unit. (Which I might do anyways... anyone played with these?)

Love your write up by the way, looking at doing something similar with my Metro.

Yep. Those resistors make sure you use the same energy for blinkers regardless..............
