You mean the bolt head below the knuckle's mounting surface?

I can't see where changing the distance from ball to knuckle surface is advantageous; when the stud or bolt is stout enough to do it all without flex- and I'd sure think they are.

Well, yeah, bolt head or nut, depending on what you used. It could just as well have the bolt head on top of the ball.
