The cost of 80 MPH speed limits

Thought I would post this TV station video about Utah raising the speed limits to 80 MPH and the time savings vs extra fuel cost comparision.

If your suv gets 15 mpg at 60, I doubt FE is of any consequence to you.

I say let them go 80mph. The only function of a speed limit is to set a reference point to calculate how big a speeding ticket will be. They didn't say they were setting a minimum to 80... they were going to raise the limit.

In America there are places soo rural you can travel at 100 mph for hours and not see even another vehicle or gas station. Better pace yourself heading West.

10% drop per 5mph over over 60mph?

If anything I get better MPG in my Integra by driving 75 vs 65 and that's with the engine at 3750rpm vs 3250

I maintained 120mph in Montana for 75 miles straight in my accord. Average mpg that tank was 19.75 over 154 miles. The rest of them being done at 75mph

Prove it. It might be the first car to accomplish that feat.

Here's a thread with 50 different cars tested, and past 45 mph they all lost mpg with increasing speed.

Time cant be saved, but used more efficiently. At the end of the trip the person sit in front of the tube, he has not gained anything. If that person use the extra time during the trip to say, have conversation with son or daughter it has not been wasted.

That the monetary cost are a wash they missed some points. If the person earns $20 they only have about $13 to spend after taxes. The additional wear to the vehicle is not included nor the additional time fueling the vehicle. The use of only one MPG example does not give the complete picture, costs will vary,
a poor news piece.

I get over 18mpg just driving around town and to and from work not even trying.

Unmodified and with out a turbocharger I got between 15 and 16 mpg drving at 80+mph, I only did that once and it was just keeping up with traffic.
Now even with the turbo I usually only get up to 65 to 70mph even if the speed limit is 85mph.
I have not found my self in a situation with 80+mph traffic since that trip.
