Classic VW "aero" trunk

Automotive | Modern Mechanix | Page 4

OK, I looked, then looked, then looked some MORE and can't find the post where aerohead mentions this. So here it is in a new thread.

i wonder how adding 110lbs plus behind the rear wheel in rr car changes it's "throttle steering" around corner.

That's a very interesting accessory, Frank. I suspect 110lb is the capacity, to weigh that empty it would be made of 1/4" plate metal.

Look at this:

Even people who *are* thinking about the aerodynamics use those square end caps and don't think about the air flowing off the drip rail.

I looked at something similar. I use the '58 Canadian Beetle as a 'chicken coop' to store bumper and seats, and it has this cargo pod on top.

I positioned it as a boat tail, replacing the engine lid, to see how much I'd have to chop out for engine clearance

I forget that angle but it looks like ~22.5° to me now. It would need a pie-cut to give it adequate plan taper; something I haven't chosen to do yet.

Ron -- What will it take to get it running?

1/4" steel plate weight per sqft is 10.20lbs.

ps. what makes it a canadian model?

edjumicated guess would be 184 lbs in 1/4" plate; not including brackets

baldlobo -- Ah well—I was going to change that to 1/8" and didn't. If I had we would pretty much agree.

On the Beetle's bona fides: Any VIN number would have been in the front spare tire well, or on the floorpan. Those are both gone. It has a combination of the big back window with European turn signals (the empty semaphore turn signal pockets).

In case you didn't know it was purchased as a donor car to build the model in my profile picture. Which was painted first. Compare the purple tops, it seemed like it was meant to be, ten years ago. Now I'm starting to wonder.

ron -- Ultramaroon!
