Negative (black background) LCDs

Has anyone been able to source an STN negative LCD?
These are the ones that display the characters brightly on a black background, more like an LCD display that one would find in a new car's dashboard rather than one that's totally backlit.
I have found some online but they seem to be quite pricey versus the recommended backlit ones.
Is there anyone who knows how to read the specs in electronics catalogs like Mouser's who can point me to a part number that will achieve this end?

I used to mess around with lcd displays when i was a kid. I turned the polarising plastic in front of the screen upside down. This created the effect you are looking for. I'm sure it would look nice with a backlit screen too...in the dark....mmmmmm!!! Wont work if the polariser is bonded to the screen though. Unless you can get it off without damaging anything.
