A new best tank for the Toyota Matrix: 48 MPG

We took the Matrix up north this weekend to help my brother in law move into his new place. Since I hardly ever get to run an entire tank though the Matrix (its really the wife's car), now was my chance. Unfortunately, we were a bit rushed to get there and back, so we took the interstate instead of county roads which keep us at a lower speed. The wife also drove it for half the day on Monday before filling up. The result was 403.4 miles on 8.47 gallons which comes out to 47.6 mpg. If I would have been able to hit the county roads I know 50 would have been mine! I guess I have to wait until next time.

Congratulations on the success from another Matrix owner!
My (wife's) Matrix currently gives about 25 mpg (US). I don't hypermile but am fuel economy conscious when driving. It will take eons for the car to brake in to return better numbers.
Just edited for grammar.

yeah that sounds about right We took my buddys 2003 matrix auto on a trip a few weeks ago around a 700 mile drive averaging around 80-85 MPH and it still did 33 MPG average on that trip i was very surprised cause it was the first week he had gotten it so we were playin around with it alot and not really focusing much on fuel economy
