I've been riding the hilly terrain of coastal California for the last couple months. There is NO WAY a single speed would get the job done here- hills are too steep, even if you're in fantastic shape. I've been riding an old Schwinn 10 speed, and even in 1st gear the burn my quads get on some of these hills is something else. Too bad the rest of my body doesn't match my legs now!
A single speed would be just fine in the flatlands though. Many years ago I took the small front chainwheel and front derailleur off my Fuji Sports 12 because I never used it. If I ever bring that bike to Cali, though, those parts are going back on.
Stadium? o yeah, thats a toughy, i only take it when im up for a challenge, otherwise if i need to go to that part of town i take val imm up the back of campus, my gearing is too tall for a hill like that everyday
my youth pushes me up that hill, the worst part is near the top when it starts to bend to the right, its the steepest and the sidewalk is banked a little too

Are you saying you make it all the way from bottom to top on a fixie??? I'll come to Mkt to see that!
