If you'd like to twist your wife's arm on the SUV thing (not that I'd highly recommend that), two baby seats and our luggage fit into my '67 Mustang convertible for weekend trips, if not quite up to a longer trip than that.

The web search only finds the whole site, but I believe this was priced at ~$14K. That leaves some cushion for a Buick LaCrosse hybrid engine swap.

Plus you have the opportunity to suicide the rear doors. Very convenient for a family situation.

Well, after all the stress work has put us through the past few months, they are reverting most of the changes, and we now get to keep the company vehicle. Looks like I'm stuck with the Mazda CX-5 for the next 4 years. Wouldn't be the vehicle I'd choose to personally own, but I'm far from complaining. I no longer have a good excuse to buy a cheap used EV though. The list of vehicles under my avatar are only those that are currently driven, just for my wife and I.

Glad you get to keep the car. Not a current need but for anyone else coming across this thread. We have 2 young children and I would not recommend a Chevy volt. Very low roof in the back and not much rear leg room so the front seats have to move forward.

Carseats present very unique challenges.

We have a traverse for my wife, excellent size but a little lacking in the mpg dept. Generally 20 to 22mpg for our 2wd version.
