New morning commute mpg record.

This morning I set a PB for the morning commute. Starting from a cold start, with car having been sitting for 18 hours (it is garaged, but it is starting to get chilly here overnight), my 3.9 mile town driving trip returned 60.0 UK mpg (49.96 US mpg - 4.71 l/100 km). Even for a 1.2 litre Honda Jazz, that's a good figure.

Awesome!

Given that's under 10km, with not much time to get the car warm at all, that's not bad.

ScanGauge said the maximum coolant temperature reached was 75°C/167°F. It normally runs at 85°C/185°F.

Imagine how much better MPG you might get if you used an engine-oil heater while the car was sitting overnight in that garage; either in-block or merely a 60W lightbulb under the oil pan.

Of course, that means you will have to balance cost-of-petrol versus cost-of-electricity; but, a definite benefit would be early morning cabin heating would be faster!

The problem is I have no electricity in my garage, and not likelihood of ever getting any. It is a garage rented from the county and remote from my flat.
In the winter I do not use any cabin heating for the commuter runs. I leave the control set for "Blue", so that the heater doesn't steal warm water from the coolant system. I just wear a winter jacket. The winter temperature, here at the bottom of Kirkcaldy, is seldom below freezing. An exceptionally cold morning would be -6°C/21°F and that is just one or two a winter. And it is only 10 - 15 minutes.

I actually managed 60.3 this morning, despite "traffic interference" at almost every junction. You guys must be teaching me something!
