New Poll: What Vehicle To put the Mother Earth Hybrid In

I am taking suggestions for the Mother Earth Hybrid Conversion.

Here are the basic parameters:

1. Has to be cool.

2. Must be big enough to go across country comfortably with a family of 4.

3. Has to be inexpensive to purchase.

So far, the VW Bus or a Geo Metro is tops, but the VW Buses are too, well, ordinary ( been done enough ) and the Metro is too small.

I am looking for different, yet something that would generate positive attention as it went down the road.

I'm guessing you want something older too, and a stick shift.

some suggestions:
BMW : 2002 | eBay

BMW : 5-Series | eBay 4 door might be nice

Volkswagen : Jetta | eBay

You could look a little longer for a camper MicroBus or get one of the older body-styles and 'trick it out.' Have a tent-awning that extends out the sliding door and a 'privacy' potty with solar heated, hot water bags thrown on top . . . ooohhh ladder to the 'observation deck.'

Something are so retro they come around to being cool again:

But I fully understand this is your project and you have my support. I think it is a project with considerable merit.

Economy death by wind resistance on anything bus sized though. You will have to do some figguring and find a compromise between power needed and available power, the chassis will drive the engine/generator/circuitry selections or vice versa or something in between.

I tell you what, if someone knows where there is a cheap VW van that needs a motor let me know. But I do like the vans that have no nose to them, like the Toyota Van from the 80s, and the Mitsubishi Van that was similiar.

The ones that I think are really cool are the 60s Ford Econoline and Dodge A series vans.

If it has a funky vibe to it, all the better.

Wonder how much those Bathtub Nashes are going for?

I guess the big question is how much weight do you plan on adding?

Toyota Echo or Tercel
Both came standard with 5 speed transmission.
Larger than a Metro.
Smaller than a lot of stuff on the road.
Reasonable Aerodynamics. (easily modded)
Seats 4 comfortably and five if the three in the back are small or really like each other.
