During Earth Hour 2008, Drouin and his wife, Cindy Giroux, were sitting in the dark in their Baie d'Urfé home, coming up with ideas about what they could do to green up their lifestyle. They were already doing some of the basics: recycling and composting and buying used stuff at garage sales whenever possible to reduce their consumption.

But as a two-car family, they knew car use was one area where they could make some changes, especially since Drouin was commuting 40 kilometres a day to and from his job in Ville Saint Laurent. They decided, right there in the dark, that they would find a way to get themselves an electric vehicle before Earth Hour rolled around again.

Well, about 10 days ago, during Earth Hour 2009, Drouin was celebrating the first 500 kilometres driven on his now fully electric Volkswagon Karmann Ghia.
