I learned to like cairo bbq sauce exclusively when I went to school in southern IL, nice thing was it was not super sweet (mostly vinegar and peppers) and you could slap it on for the whole cook without getting big burnt sugar bubbles all over your food. Good stuff.

Dinnertime.

We didn't have a lot in the fridge, but just coming up with something based on ingredients, dinner would be bean burritos and mock Rueben sandwiches!

Guess which items I couldn't eat!

I made mock Ruebens for the both of us (leaving the Thousand Island Dressing off mine)

I was going to make myself a bean burrito as well, but shockingly, the semi-organic tortillas had trace amounts of corn syrup in them! Corn syrup was a sub-ingredient of "honey-powder".

Instead, I dumped the burrito filling over a plate of corn chips to make uber-nachos. The irony being that corn chips are one of the few things without corn syrup.

I also had a glass of wine!

Hi,

Ketchup has more sugar in it that ice cream.

BTW, my grandfather worked for Pennick & Ford in Cedar Rapids, and he had the patent on making clear corn syrup.

I think I'm going to join you in this quest!

Just a note on bread: I don't know for sure about commercial breads, but usually most of the sugar (or I suppose HFCS) is going to be metabolized by the yeast, so you wind up with ethanol and lots of little bubbles.

After doing a quick look through my fridge I can say that almost everything in there corn syrup listed at least once. So far my milk is safe(until the chocolate syrup goes in).

A lot of the popular commercial breads have a sweet taste. Either they don't let the yeast finish or they add extra sugar. I bet it's a little of both.

White crystal death: sugar, salt, coke, smack, ice...

I dont think we use nearly as much corn syrup in processed foodstuffs here in NZ, but we sure use a ton of sugar from fiji. But I'm going to keep an eye out for the korn.

Maybe the USA is 'the children of the korn'

If ya eat organic it makes missing all those weird substitute/preservative type ingredients really easy. I go to a major supermarket near me for most things organic (top foods) but also have to stop in at the local hippy mart (co-op) to get a better selection. Pretty rare but when I have to drive my truck I get some strange looks at the hippy mart...its a crewcab 4x4 longbed diesel (witha biodiesel sticker on the fuel tank door)

heck I even drink organic beer from the local brewer (Fish Tale organic IPA is awesome)

Day Four.

Day Four:

Breakfast:
Coffee with sugar in the raw and actual cream.
2 slices of vegetarian pizza left over from last night.

Maple Roll from organic bakery at Victory Garden Rain Barrel build event. (I confirmed its source and ingredients before eating!)

Lunch:
Meatloaf sandwich w/ cheese - no sauce.

Dinner:
Salad: organic lettuce, carrots, onions, dried cranberries (sugar-sweetened) and natural dressing
Spaghetti & meatballs:
Pasta made from Jerusalem Artichoke flower, meatballs from local, organic beef, organic sauce and mushrooms, and of course, love.

It's amazing. My refridgerator actually has food in it, instead of containers!

The food I am eating tastes better and has less ingredients.

I will be lucky if I don't GAIN weight on this experiment.

I'll have to start taking photos of what I eat. Some of it's getting pretty good. Of course we don't cook from scratch every night, but dinner was delicious.

Too bad my wife is so shy, or I would put up a photo of her and her delicious spaghetti!

Gotta go. I have an experiment on the stove which will allow me to enjoy margaritas!
