O2 sensor

Hi, I'am a new member to this web-site and have a question for everyone that might have done this to their suv. I have a 08 hyundai santa fe gsl with the 2.7 engine. I'am trying to improve the mpg. I have removed the first muffler and left the 2 rear mufflers. Have increased my in town mpg by 3. My next step is to put O2 sencer extenders in to raise the tip of the O2 to top part of exhaust pipe. This should make the ecu , lean to some extent, my gas useage. My question to the members , will this change the factory perminters on the O2's enough that it will cause the ck engine light to come on? My friend did this on his lod ford van with a 351 v8 and his mpg went from 13 to 18. Looking forward to any info that would help. Thanks

How does spacing your oxygen sensor get the engine to run lean?

I do know that running too lean increases your emissions.

Smile 02 senser change

Orange4Boy, thanks for the question. By raising the 02 tip this will make the gas ratio reading lower. Computer on car should adjust your fuel useage to a lower reading, which means better mpg.

I understood your original description but I want to know why the readings would be lower.

Why do you get a lower reading by offsetting the o2 sensor? Temperature difference? More oxygen at the pipe wall?
