Neither of those cars has front skirts. It's the angle of the photo that you're looking from that makes it seem that way. If you look closer, you can see that the front wheels are open. Probably the backs, too.

If we're gonna call some of the 1/2 skirts guys are making here "skirts" I think the Metro qualifies too!

Or maybe a skirt is only a skirt if it's an added on piece, not built in?

How about "skirted"?

Er... is there a definition?

Both Hudson and Nash (which merged in, I think, 1954) had "enclosed wheels" as a styling/engineering feature in the late 40's/early 50's. The Metropolian was the last car they sold with sich a feature. Frank, you're right that they weren't detachable skirts, and both manufacturers used a much narrower front track so that they could have a decent steering radius. And, yes, the Metro didn't have totally enclosed front wheel wells, but the early 50's Nash Ambassador certainly did. And it could be a pain to change a tire under adverse circumstances! You had to jack those puppies up!

I wonder if you could cut out a long narrow strip from the discarded air dam and make it fit where you want your grill block.

Another related point - a curved angled surface will be a lot like a windshield. If you unroll the gentle curve of such a piece you'll find that the long "straight" side isn't straight at all. It's curved so that the ends point up (when sloped back like a windshield is). Most air dams and grill blocks etc. will do the same.
