I have an '04 Ion with the 2.2L Ecotec, and so far it's just needed suspension bushings (under extended warranty) and a backup light switch ($28). It's at 107,000 miles (6 years) and I just replaced the battery, and am preparing to replace the plugs and refresh the fluids for the very first time. Mileage is very good (36 mpg with my nightly hill climb is nothing to sneeze at for a pretty decent-sized car, and it gets 40-42 mpg straight freeway.)

...the newer "direct-injection" ECO-TECH is definitely on-par with the rest of the world, but it's taken GM quite awhile to get around to deciding that HP isn't the ONLY thing that's important.

...case in point: their "band-aid" XFE offerings...can you say "...day late, and $ short?"

...I want truly 'well designed-in and engineered' fuel-economy (something the Japanese and Europeans understand), not just "last minute" band-aids.

...definite "bright" lights are the Cadillac HTS and Camaro V6 direct-injection engines, and the yet-to-be-seen Cruze 1.4L turbo.

Silver - '010 Cobalt XFE
Thanks: 58

I just got my new 010 cobalt XFE on the road, 43mpg right off the first 240 miles mixed town and one long highway bout, not bad for a motor that takes 8k to break in.

Now my elderly buick with everything broken including the frontend is RIP.

Cheers
Ryan

...congratulations!

...before I ended up with the 2009 Vibe, I "tried" to get a Pontiac G5 XFE, but none were available in AZ...only thing available would have to have been trucked in from another dealer in another state!

...and, unfortunately, the wife wanted an automatic--which isn't available (but *is* on the 2011 Cruze--dang nab it)

Your post definitely needs more references.
