For those who are living next to a nuclear plant, there's a bit more reason for concern.

During checks, cracks have been found in the reactor vessel of Doel 3 near Antwerp.
On local radio, a spokesman for the controlling agency said they were worried most about the sheer number of cracks.
The damage likely dates back to the time they were produced, and is next to impossible to repair.

Tihange 3, with a similar pressure vessel built by the same company - Rotterdamsche Droogdok Maatschappij, now defunct - in the same time frame, has shut down for precautionary checks.

The tests came about as the result of finding indications of fissures in a French nuclear installation, way back in 2004 !

Worldwide, another 18 reactor vessels built by the same company are in use.
Two in the Netherlands, two in Spain, one in Sweden, two in Switzerland, 10 in the United States and one in Argentina.

Global Warming May Affect Existing Nuclear Power Plants

Global climate change also caused a nuclear power plant in CT to be shut down -- the ocean water was ~6F too warm for it to be cooled.

I enjoyed how the WSJ piece glossed over the mutations of things non-human.

You mean this part?
Quote:
(A recent study of butterflies near Fukushima confirms the well-known fact that radiation leads to mutations in insects and other simple life-forms. Research on those exposed to the atomic bombs shows, however, no similar mutations in higher species such as humans.)
Are you saying the author should have spent more time on simple life-form mutations when the point of the article was to focus on the effect of radiation on humans?

That was the point?

Looked to me like the point was to defend nukes.

This sums it up well :

Quote:
the bottom line is that Fukushima passed the test.
The fact is, it didn't pass the test at all.
If it really passed, it'd have been shut down without any further ado, and without radiation being released.

Desperate last ditch methods, risking the lives of those who made them work, were required to prevent a total catastrophy.
That's not passing the test, that's escaping disaster by a hair !

Humans are a bad breed to check for mutations due to our slow reproduction rate.
