I have my reservations about the 1.9D (I assume it's SDI?) engine in day to day use. It's a very thrifty engine and incredibly simple (as all non-Turbo diesels are) but I don't think it'll be particularly drivable on the motorway with such little power.

I'm currently getting ~67 MPG(UK) out of my Fabia 1.9 TDi, but I'll be interested to see what you get from this.
The 1,9D in this is a N/A AEF engine, it’s a bit early for the Sdi. It made it up the road in fine style, cruising happily at 70ish.
Your 67 MPG will be tough to beat- these mechanical fuel pump cars are missing a trick or two- like DFCO etc. mind you, it gives me something to aim for if I stick to 60mph on the motorway

Nicely done. Can't wait to see the mods.

Apologies for the lack of sheep-will attempt to remedy it later!
I’m sure I could stick this in a container should you want it
Yeah, tomorrow I’ll hopefully get a look at it and see if I can find any quick wins

RunningStrong's point could be addressed with underbody mods and a boattail.
We work in £ Sterling usually about 1.2 euro to the £
Boat tail will not be likely due to insurance restraints- I’ll be doing for the simple stuff first- and also looking at alternative fuel options- this car is kind of an experimental indulgence

Aye , was not a bad buy!
To be honest- pretty much cheap enough to be disposable should anything major go wrong..

On the run up the road it used approx. ½ a tank of fuel. Based on the £25 put in at 1.259/Litre and 229.4 miles, that is
19.86L
4.37 (imp) Gal/ 5.25 (us) Gal
52.49 (imp) MPG/ 43.69 (us) MPG

This figure will likely drop off for the remainder of the tank as it’ll be doing mainly town work.

Once this tank is done I can start to drive it with economy in mind and see what I can achieve.

Just now it is 17 (imp) MPG up on my next most economical car

I like to fill right after a roadtrip like that just so I can sample what I did on the trip. I'm kinda jealous, I'd like one of those.

Forgive the dumb question but since a diesel has no throttle or ignition, how else can you drop revs other than cutting the fuel?

On my petrol cars the injectors cut out if you're off the throttle and above about 1500rpm
Therefore no fuel is used.

On this engine, the fuel pump is driven from the engine, so if the engine is pumping it still moves fuel. On the last one i had-best results were achieved by using neutral and idle rather than in gear decel up to junctions

Just kidding about the sheep...lol. Wife and I vacationed in Scotland a few years back, and we'd never seen so many sheep before...lol. Beautiful countryside. We live in Colonial "New Scotland" over here in Atlantic Canada.

I think these are groovy little cars, and I wish some of the more FE Euro models were available over here. I must do some investigation with RIV and see what models are allowed and which ones are not. I can handle RH drive no problem, and getting it across the ocean isn't all that difficult either...it's getting plates and insurance that's the hard part.

In any case, cool project...I'll b following along with interest.

Just curious...but is 52mpg (imp) about as good as these cars get?

I don't know anything about them, but I would have expected a little better from a light little diesel like this.

Are they capable of more?

the non turbo diesels are not as efficient as the later tdi engines. That said, the economy so far is on a par with thr mk3 golf td i had previously.

the run above was done at 70mph on tyres with 32psi in them, lights wipers and heater all on

At the end of the day, i went from 35mpg to 52mpg for sub $300, so £ call that a win.

reckon i may see 10% more without too many mods if I'm clever- i believe robchalmers from here ran one so i'll stsrt at his thread

Rob's best seems to have been 64.36 (IMP)mpg, so that is something to aim for.

his build thread is here:

and the fuel log is here:
