Pontiac Sunfire Check engine light PO440

Hi everyone,

I got a call this morning from my wife on her way in to work.

Her check engine light came on, so she pulled over and called me. We just happened to have a Scangauge hooked up, so I told her how to scan for the error code.

It was PO440. I looked that up and found that it is "P0440 Evaporative Emission Control System Malfunction".

What does that mean? It doesn't sound too bad. Could it be as simple as a loose gas cap?

I would like to be able to fix this myself, instead of sending it to a shop, but I am not sure where to start.

Any suggestions?

Thanks,

-Ben

I just got an e-mail from my wife:

"Ben,

I checked the gas cap on my car and it was NOT screwed on all the way. I
screwed it back on and now that check light if OFF. yeah.

-Me"

Looks like it really WAS just the gas cap!

I wonder what that would have cost if you had taken it to a shop. ;-)
