There isn't any interest here in the midwest either, it is just fringe. Building is strictly done out of love.

It is incredible to see the animosity between the various types of bicycle riders. I have showed up to rides on a recumbent and had acquaintances basically shun me even though they talked to me from when I rode with them on an upright.

I got into recumbents because of my interest in ultra distance events.

Depending on what you want there are some great home-built designs. That can copied.

Did you notice the spare tire that I was carrying in the yellow bike?

Only a biker would have the audacity to think someones bike isn't cool enough.

As If biking is cool. (I can say they are dorks because I am one.)

That's odd, I like all kinds of bikes.

Another odd thing is the Redneck Recumbent- usually I do lots of research before actually diving into a project but with this one, I'd accidentally come across a pic of a Cruzbike and I thought how simple that would be to build. AFTER the fact is when I thought about proper ergonomics.

I didn't see that spare at first!

I hadn't even thought about building a bike until I saw how much fun you were having Frank. Since the last time I was on here about two weeks ago I found the RecycledRecumbent site and that gave me the idea to build one of his Mach II bikes using parts from a Trek mountain bike. What I built is a long wheelbase type with the front steering tube flipped giving it more rake on the front wheel to eliminating some of the tiller affect. It's not totally finished but I was able to ride it for the first time today. Even though I still have to bend the forks a little more to tune the steering, it's already a blast to ride!

Frank Have you considered putting an idler straight above the fork and mounting the bottom bracket to the frame on a boom. It prevents torque steer. The Atomic Zombies has done a lot of work with redneck type of bikes. Atomic Zombie Extreme Machines! - Bikes Trikes and Chopper Plans

I wanted to try this way first, to avoid a longer twistier chain and to see just how bad the torque steering really was.

I have to back away a bit on an earlier statement "I like all kinds of bikes". Come to think of it, I think the lowrider bikes are pretty stupid- nothing cool about scraping the pedals on the road.

Give us a side shot of you on the bike and I'll see what I can do about a trash barrel fairing. Just be sure to keep the paper bag over your head so you don't get overrun with them 'pappyratsie' types.

Frank,

I came across a interesting web site a while back with many different types of homemade bikes.

You may find it helpful with your project. Here are two links that relate to your project, or just click on the category of your choice at the top of the page.

AtomicZombie Builder's Gallery - Short Wheelbase Recumbent 1

AtomicZombie Builder's Gallery - Long Wheelbase Recumbent 1

This guy also provides tutorials on bike component repair and fabrication.

Atomic Zombie Extreme Machines! - Bikes Trikes and Chopper Plans

Good luck with your project.

Bikes are cool...

Back to front wheel drive bikes for a sec

Good for when pedestrians and cars don't honor your right-of-way on a bikelane
