Has anyone tried to heat form lexan. It looks like the perfect material for a project like this, see through. Just a question. I know it very tough and they get nice radius in many applications. I think you have done great job Metro. I really dislike paint, never get it right. There is a product called E-poxy paint from marine stores that you apply with a brush which is self-leveling and looks sprayed on. I did a very good job on 22 foot aluminum boat a couple years ago and it still looks good. Not cheap $22 a quart but the price is worth the aggrivation

Phil: I had to read that a few times before I got the joke.

homeworkhome - I think that's the answer! I've used that paint before as well, and my brush job also turned out very well. Much better than the spray job. Also, the epoxy will be a more durable finish than spray "enamel". Thanks!

Did a bit more work on the kammback this evening (still not 100% finished): this time I was painting the underside flat black. With a brush. Looks great! #&$^ spray cans....

I also weighed it: 10.5 lbs.

The car is mostly cleaned up. Now I need to drill a couple more holes to mount this thing well.

First post, I have been lurking for a while primarily watching the progress of the kammback. Absolutely incredible work, I personally think it looks great. About the paint, I have used that spray on bedliner in the past for less than perfect surfaces. It comes in a tall spray can that costs about $7. I know it sounds like it would make for a rough surface, but it's really not too bad. And because it is not very reflective, it hides very well.

Welcome to EM!! A good thread for your starter post.

I like the idea of spray on bedliner. I have worked at Rhino Linings for 7 years now. But got me wondering how would that black textured spray paint look, I see it at Lowes all the time and have been wanting to try it on something, my skirts,,,,Hmmm

Thank you for the kind words. Yeah, this stuff comes out MUCH smoother than what you spray. You can even vary the pattern by holding the can farther/closer to the surface. Not nearly as tough as Rhino Lining, but once it cooks in the sun, it is fairly impressive.

spray on bedliner? ask and ye shall receive

there are 2 different kinds

"undercoat" is half the price, and half the texture

this is behind the interior panels of my old truck

i didn't really do much prep, i just wanted a little extra sound deadening. notice the smooth texture

now, heres the "truck bed coating"

its coarser to the touch, and the color looks more "dull" than the undercoat (which looks more "glossy")

you can also use it to give a little more "pep" to your interior panels (mine were very scuffed/scratched in this area)

prep work is key! i didn't do much, this was just an experiment to see if i could save a few bucks by not buying the roll-on. for my use (offroad/fishing/camping truck,) i would have been better off using the roll-on, its a lot thicker and more durable.

btw, if you are looking for a way to "clean up" the bolts on top, use carriage bolts (the ones with the smooth dome top). they look like they need a square hole to seat properly, but thats only if you are using a lot of torque. with a round hole, you can just hold the top by hand and tighten the nut underneath.

i like this idea, makes me wonder if it would make a difference on my suv. i know theres a major low pressure area back there, its enough to suck dirt past the rear hatch seals.

Ah, the wonder of grainy photography!

Thanks for the bedliner spray idea. The air at the rear of the car certainly wouldn't care whether the paint surface is perfectly smooth or pebbly.

I'm leaning toward the epoxy paint route, but I can see the attraction of something that "hides well" so I don't have to spend a bunch more time doing smoothing bodywork.

But I'm still not going to refinish the thing until next year.

And welcome to the forum!
