I have made pretty much the same points to a guy I know who's a mechanic at a Mr Transmission. His reply was clear: "don't do it if it can't be flat towed."

Personally, yes, I sometimes do it for short distances (few hundred ft). But based on my friend's response, I sure wouldn't recommend even that to anyone.

That's really vague, though. Just about anything can be flat towed for a fair distance before the manufacturer says that it needs to be trailered. Often, they have a top speed at which this should be done, as well.

I'm trying to find the info for my Caravan, but I haven't been able to find an online operator manual yet. (I'm not trying too hard, really.)

I'd like to think that people might open their eyes at some point... instead, I find it more and more likely that I'll just close mine.

I was thinking that too, like some of mine say a max of 50 miles at 50 mph. I've flat towed the van (4T60E) about 15 miles with no problems, 2 or 3 times so far.

i can go smoothly from N to D4 at speed. it doesnt seem to be a problem. you just have to anticipate when to go back to D4 and continue driving

Not really, saturn s-series automatics were flat towable, that's why you see so many behind RVs. course most stick shifts are TOADs too.

There is a list from 2002 here
Approved Tow Vehicles
