Dekotora trucks are quite weird-looking. Well, there are trucks with some strange decorations here in Brazil too, but nothing so extreme.

I have no idea how the above example is supposed to work, and in which direction.

Well, had that ducting in front of the A-pillar been clear in order to not harm visibility, I'd actually be quite curious to test-drive it

Test drive? I don't think it would move.

Just A Car Guy: yes, there actually WAS a worse looking design for the Edsel that they passed over

It is art, so by definition its only function is to not have a function.

Nowadays that any pointless deed can be highlighted as some sort of art, I am forced to agree with you.

Raymond Loewy: Speed Whiskers on Toothbrushes?
Graphis, February 1998

Quote:
Although streamlining helped launch Loewy’s career, his aerodynamic designs were not the commercial success everyone thought they were.

As it turned out, the wind tunnel of streamlining was full of hot air. A case in point the Hupmobile, a smart-looking sedan Loewy designed in 1934, which he cited over and over as an example of the positive impact of streamlining on commerce – failing of course to mention that the Hupp Automobile Company went belly up in 1940.
I'm still trying to figure out it it was just "a look" or if he ever visited a wind tunnel.

Quote:
Elisabeth Reese, his public relation advisor for 28 years, remembers someone once asking Loewy why he had permitted certain details on his 1950 Studebaker. Unprepared and unrehearsed, Loewy pondered dramatically before answering with his heavy French accent, “Because I like it this way.”
Quote:
Back in the 1950s and 1960s, the politically-correct design crowds of the Museum of Modern Art also believed that Loewy wasn’t a designer – they thought that he was a stylist at best..................

“Streamlining is not good design,” wrote the author Edgar Kaufmann Jr. “Its theme is the magic of speed, expressed by teardrop shapes, fairings, and a curious ornament of parallel lines – sometimes called speed whiskers. The continued misuse of these devices has spoiled them for most designers.”......

So, yes, Loewy had no taste. He had, nevertheless, something else. Raymond had panache.

Raymond Loewy was my hero. I almost went to study Industrial Design because of him.
Turns out I'm not a designer. I went for Computer Science instead.

Tell me about it.

But this is the UN-aerodynamic thread (I posted that for the pre1930 models) Here's one for getting back on topic. When somebody drove into my 2nd Beetle, I cut the front fenders off and lost 5mph of top speed. This was a year or two after Gary Emory built the 'world's first baja bug' in SoCal. It also had rear fenders that were bobbed to the legal limit (24") but I don't have a picture of that.

Those front wheels are from the set I traded for the Dasher. I miss them and every Beetle I ever owned.
