Reducing ride height by "resetting" coil springs

They lower the car too much and hasten the death of the stock dampers as badly as poorly cut springs.

I think this is the key; lowering too much leads to hitting the bump stops too often and too hard which can lead to no good. Even though my drop job was about 2", the car rode pretty high stock (5" ground clearance and lots of total strut travel) and so lowering made it look "average"; certainly not slammed.
