I must reply...

OK -- with Plug-In hybrids in Cali, how many times has the grid gone into rolling blackouts after the work rush (5-6 p.m. to 5 a.m.)? AFIK, none. Generally this happens in mid-afternoon. When do plug-in hybrids generally re-charge? I would think overnight (when demand is low).

Granted, the grid is weak in SoCal, and Nationwide -- but a steady increase in draw, over time, should allow planning/response from the California energy regulators to allow for this additional increase. I should certainly hope.

I can't speak to this past summer, but is CA still buying power from Texas? I don't recall the rolling blackouts like last summer ('06).

Baby-steps folks. We can't expect the mass-populace to buy into pure-electric, trailer-driven electrical vehicles. Granted, EVs can solve the problem, but marketing and public perception overrides the current solution. It takes a steady re-education by means of experience to introduce the "Average Joe/Jane" to these vehicles in CA and Nationwide. It's a grass-roots movement of exhibiting personal preference and a statement of personal choice. If more people do it, more of the public is able to accept it. Unfortunately, it's Sociological instead of Economical.

Totally with you RH77.... There's the "right" thing to do - right after the "mediocre" things to get us there It is also economical too - that is, if the option isn't economical, people won't come to market. If the prius had a sticker price of $50,000 - that'd push it off the table for many...

Also, no blackouts in summer '07 either.

Most of the blackouts were thanks to the novel trading practices of Enron.

I believe that we (Californians) buy most of our out-of-state power from Wyoming. Wyoming, coincidentially, has the highest CO2 emissions per capita of any state. Most of the power produced in-state comes from natural gas. Not much CO2 per KwH, but we're still quite dependent on other regions for our fuel.
