Schematic question

Hi,
Newbie to this type of high power design: I have 2 electric forklifts to play with
as guinea-pigs for this testing

1) I was wondering what the purpose of the original dump diodes into the 24 470uF caps from the motor+ to the positive battery buss.
is this for clamping inductive spikes gen'd from the motor? or regeneration purposes?

2) for reversing the motor, do you guys use a big contactor to reverse the leads
( prior to insuring a shutdown or idle state of the controller?
