94 Honda Civic VX lean burn question

What causes the ECU to put the engine into lean burn? Temperature, oxygen, the airspeed velocity of a swallow carrying a coconut?

I'm trying to track down some lean burn issues, and while I perform some troubleshooting steps, I would like to have a little more info on lean burn from people who have alot more experience with it than I do. Thanks.

I believe it's some combination of:
Coolant temp, intake air temp, RPM, manifold pressure (proxy for engine load), throttle position, and possibly a few other factors.

Have you been able to chase down a good manual for your car? The factory manual or equivalent should lay out the conditions. There are places you can download factory-type manuals for various Honda products; not sure if the VX one is in that list.

I do have a paper service manual for my car, and a huge PDF one.

What can I do to test this? What can cause it to be incorrect?

Google search. You can use a voltmeter and monitor the 02 output. It's load throttle position 02 temp and map load.
