Lightbulb Smooth Wheel Cover Discussion Thread

There are so many different options and techniques out there, so I figured why not.

Lets begin...

A lot of us are bargain hunters. So maybe we find hubcaps
on sale or maybe we just want to use the ones we have.

What can you use to fill in the gaps of a stock hubcap?
(tape the front with painters tape, and spray expanding foam thru the back?)

Can I attach plastic/metal trays over my hubcaps?

(whats the best method? glue, screws?)

I much prefer the look of smoothie or Hollywood flipper hubcaps. Homebrew ecomod hubcaps are too tacky, IMHO.

1. On the honda I would cut a 2mm thick plastic ring to cover those holes and glue it in place. Then repaint the whole thing

2. That Vw hubcap would look the best if you would cut similar shape clear plastic pieces like those holes, and glue them in place with clear butulene kit.

All my personal opinions .

Why bother even covering those tiny holes? Just leave them be, they look cool and will have virtually zero impact on aerodynamics.

i like the plastic ring idea

but it does have to be those hubcaps
(it could be anything you found with a good profile)

At the moment, I'm with him and have egg wisk wheels which I feel are having no effect at all compared with other issues, at the moment. I am willing to be pursuaded though.

Those are pretty, but the snap-ins will pop-out over time and the flipper has a "built-in" propeller :

Even though they're not chrome, the screw-in moon-eyes are probably your safest bet :

MOON Disc (Screw on) from 10" to 46"DIA at Mooneyes Store: "MOON WHEEL DISCS - SCREW ON TYPE made in USA Price is for ..."
Quote:
MOON Discs attach to the wheel rim with three (3) 10-32 self tapping metal screws designed not to penetrate the tire bead. Screw-on type MOON Discs expose 3/8" of the outer rim of your wheel. Paint your wheels to color coordinate the look of your car and add a touch of additional taste!

I like the idea of laying fiberglass cloth over the hubcap (and a little around the edges) and then coating it with the resin... done carefully, this can come out looking pretty nice...

When I have some time, I intend to do this to my Jetta hubcaps...
