Call me when they stop sticking a truck axle under the Mustang.
I just got my latest Autoweek magazine and the cover feature is on the 2010 Mustang. They are keeping the solid axle because it is idenitfied as part of the brand. Of course, the suspension used today is more sophisticated than the original leaf springs, and it does as good a job as possible controlling a solid axle. I just don't get why the people who can put an IRS under an Explorer can't do the same to the 'Stang. I'm sure cost is at the core of the problem.
But I sometimes wonder if this might not lead to the development of two distinct species of humans - H. aerobicus and H. lardassius - because you have on the one hand the stereotypical ever-growing-physique people, and on the other hand the sort who get their kicks from running marathons & riding centuries, and I'd say it's a pretty good bet that there's not a whole lot of interbreeding between the two groups :-)
But which group do you think is the faster growing one?

The typical Mustang rear axle assembly is darn tough and much less costly to build. Our newly aquired V6 Mustang rides TONS better than the 05 Scion Xb we traded in and a 99 Miata we used to have. If something works, why change it? They also are keeping costs down since all Mustangs use the same rear end, just different gear sets between the 6 and 8.

oh i guess it dont AM/FM stereo with auxiliary input jack and 4 speakers
edit it seems optional on a few base cars.
but for 14k they all have cd players and alot of other stuff does that 1500 or so(aveo) really add up that much. i mean that i what 10-20 dollars a month payment. geezs
but get the options u want, shop around u know a aveo is nothin but a redone dawoo.

It is rather disheartening when reporters just go for one angle and talk to people that are at the complete opposite side of the spectrum from people like us.
If the woman that went from a Buick sedan to an Aveo really misses the power everything, why didn't she buy one of the similarly priced "foreign" vehicles, like the Yaris or the Fit? They have power options. Has she ever heard of shopping around? "Where's the button?" I mean, please, are people that ingrained with stupidity that they can't even remember crank windows? People like that should be taken out back and shot. It would make this world a better, safer place.
A standard journalistic ploy so they can claim "balance and objectivity" in their reporting.
If the person who sold the Buick to buy the Aveo really misses the Buick so much go back and buy one. It's not like they are going UP in price!
Getting these people to think would be a major step forward.
Marginally related: the 5 y/o son of a friend recently saw the Blackfly for the first time ("DAD! Look at that awesome car!" ... before he knew whose it was). When I opened the door, he looked at the window crank and asked, "what's that for?".
I was giving some of my 9yo daughter's friends a ride last summer in my '72 Blazer and when we arrived, just before they got out, one of them asked me what the big stick sticking out of the floor was that I kept moving around.
A guy I work with just dumped his Ford SportTrac for a great deal on a new Bullit Mustang (5.4 Liter). Gets better mileage than the truck he used as a commuter. Way more smiles per gallon too. At least he is swinging in the right direction, slow though it may be.
